If things go wrong...
If you are having problems with your family, please know that this happens A LOT. Don't panic! You'd be surprised at how common this is. If you're like many of the new au pairs in Paris, you probably decided to work for a family you'd never met, compounded by you being in a foreign country with a new language and culture, this can make for a scary situation. But don't worry, there are solutions!
Begin by asking yourself if it is actually the family that is causing you strife. With your new lifestyle, it is easy to pass your boredom, fear and frustration onto the family. Once you establish a social life outside the family, this may subside.
If it is a bit more serious than just having to iron the kids' pajama's and the family is treating you badly then your first point of 'attack' is to discuss your issues with the family. Depending on their reaction, you will clearly know whether this situation can be worked out or if you need to find another family.
If you've made the decision to leave, notify the family in advance of your intentions. Consult your contract to see how much notice you have to give before terminating your relationship. If the situation is so bad that they don't agree to the contract, you may be able to leave earlier. But be logical: you must find a job before your last day or you'll be put in a tough situation.
If while in the midst of going through this very difficult situation you need further support, please contact us through our Contact Page. We will contact you the same day via phone or email (whichever you prefer) and will arrange a meeting, if you'd like. We can meet to reassure you that you are not alone and devise a plan to help you out of your situation. We will assist you while you make the transition from your old family to the new. Many au pairs are forced to switch families mid-year and still manage to enjoy the rest of their year in Paris. Don't despair!
PLEASE note that although we are based in Paris, if you are distressed and having serious problems with your family you can contact us. Whether you are in France or abroad, we will do our best to help you out. We are internationally connected and will find a way to get help to you!
